PIONEERS CAN’T CONQUER LIONS
DENTON , Texas – The Texas Woman’s University basketball team fell to Texas A&M-Commerce, 74-86, in Lone Star Conference action.
The Pioneers (9-12, 2-7) outscored the Lions, 45-40, in the second half but it wasn’t enough to overcome 30 turnovers and a 17-point deficit.
“We didn’t have a great first half but got back to within four. If you take away turnovers everything else in the game was perfect,” head coach Devin Gabbard said. “We have to take care of the ball.”
TWU started the game with six turnovers in the first four minutes of action. The Lions took advantage of the Pioneer miscues to lead 20-4 at the 13:27 mark.
After intermission, the Pioneers turned up the heat on defense to pull within four points with 4:56 remaining. Commerce responded with a jumper and three-pointer en route to the win.
“I am just really proud of the team. They were backed into a corner and that is how we approached the game,” Gabbard added. “After watching video of our last game with Commerce, I told them to win again you have to fight and that got us back in the game.”
Matalya McBath had a game-high 28 points with four rebounds, three assists and three steals. Ashley Browning and Valery Redfearn each added 13 points. Teneisha McKinney led the rebounding efforts with eight.
“Matalya had a great game scoring wise. Ashley hit some big baskets as well,” Gabbard said. “Valery also hit some key shots and was a big presence inside and outside. Adriana hit two big three’s and has stepped up her game as of late.”
Next, the Pioneers welcome Midwestern State to Magee Arena on Feb. 12 beginning at 3:00 p.m.
