McBATH BREAKS STEALS RECORD BUT ZONE STOPS PIONEERS

COMMERCE, Texas – Sophomore Matalya McBath had seven steals bringing her season tally to 78 and breaking the school record for steals in a season but it wasn’t enough as Texas A&M-Commerce defeated the Pioneers, 65-89.

The game was a match-up of two teams, TWU tied for sixth and Commerce tied for fourth in the Lone Star Conference south division, looking to qualify for postseason play. The loss drops TWU to 9-10 overall and 2-5 in conference play. Commerce improves to 9-11 and 4-3.

“We were up three points at halftime, 39-36, but the difference in the game was the 1-3-1 zone defense they implemented in the second half,” head coach Devin Gabbard said. “We just quit after they started playing zone. We didn’t play defense and on offense we didn’t attack.”

The Pioneers shooting percentages dropped dramatically from the first to second period. After shooting 44.1 percent (15 of 34) from the field and 40 percent (4 of 10) from three-point land, TWU made just 25 percent (6 of 24) and 20 percent (2 of 10) after intermission.

McBath has led the team and conference in steals throughout the season averaging 4.1 swipes a game. Alisha McCrummen held the mark with 75 steals from 1996-97. McBath added 17 points, seven boards and four assists. Ashley Browning had 19 points and four rebounds.

The Pioneers look to snap their seven-game skid on Feb. 5 at Midwestern State . Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
