LADY BUFFS PUT AWAY PIONEERS

DENTON , Texas – The Texas Woman’s University basketball team hung with West Texas A&M for twenty minutes before the Lady Buffs offense took over dropping the Pioneers, 98-64.

TWU has faced three of the top four teams, Abilene Christian, Angelo State and WTAMU, in the Lone Star Conference south division in their last three contests.

“ West Texas is a well balanced team, you have to control the paint and offensive rebounds against them. We did a poor job in both of those areas,” said head coach Devin Gabbard.

The Pioneers (9-9, 2-4) held the upper hand early when the Lady Buffs (14-5, 5-1) committed their seventh foul at the 14:45 mark in the first half. TWU took advantage of the bonus making 10 of 12 free throws in the half but didn’t continue to attack the paint. WTAMU led by eleven, 44-33, heading into intermission.

TWU started the second half by draining four free throws, two each by Matalya McBath and Teneisha McKinney. Next, Ashley Browning hit a three to trim the lead to five points, 42-47. After back-to-back turnovers by both teams, WTAMU senior Suni Jo Petty hit three consecutive three-pointers to break open the game. Browning responded with a three but WTAMU answered with a lay-up and three more three-pointers to lead by 26 points en route to victory.

“All Petty needs is one good look. We let her get hot and than the rest of their team did as well,” added Gabbard. “We lost focus for five minutes and they put us away.”

McBath had 18 of her game-high 23 points in the first half. Browning was the only other Pioneer in double figures with 14 points. Mandy Darwin led TWU with six rebounds. McKinney added seven points and six assists.

Up next, the Pioneers play at Texas A&M-Commerce on Feb. 3 beginning at 6:00 p.m.
