SHOOTING WOES HURT PIONEERS

ABILENE , Texas – The Texas Woman’s University basketball team struggled from outside the three-point line in a Lone Star Conference south division match-up at Abilene Christian and dropped their first league game of the season, 61-71.

The Pioneers (9-6, 2-1) and Wildcats (11-4, 2-0) were the top two teams in the LSC south division entering tonight’s game. The teams combined to shoot five-for-36 from behind the arc as ACU shot twenty percent (4 of 20) and TWU six percent (1 of 16).

“It just came down to execution tonight. We were undisciplined and shooting three’s early in the possession. The three’s were the difference; right there that is 15 turnovers,” said head coach Devin Gabbard. “Everything else went our way and we were able to get them in foul trouble. The effort and intensity were there but not the execution.”

TWU took their only lead at the 5:18 mark in the first half but led for just under two minutes before ACU took control of the game. The Wildcats led by six points at halftime utilizing 33 bench points and a 55-42 rebounding advantage.

Matalya McBath led the Pioneer offense for the 10th time this season with 23 points. She also recorded five assists, four steals and two rebounds. Mandy Darwin joined her in double figures with 12 points and seven rebounds. Ashley Browning registered nine rebounds, all defensive, to pace TWU on the glass.

TWU wraps up their seven-game road trip at Angelo State on Jan. 22 beginning at 7:00 p.m.
