LADY REDS SNAP PIONEERS WINNING STREAK

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The Texas Woman’s University basketball team struggled on both ends of the floor falling to Northeastern State University, 83-54, in Lone Star Conference crossover action before 700 fans.

The Pioneers (9-4, 2-0) loss ends their four-game winning streak. TWU was out rebounded by NSU, 31-40. The Lady Reds shot 57 percent making 28 of 49 field goals compared to 28 percent for the Pioneers.

“We just didn’t play a lick of defense. That is what it boils down to,” said head coach Devin Gabbard. “Our defense looked great in practice this week. We worked on different schemes to use against them but weren’t able to execute tonight.”

The game was tied, 16-16, at the 10:21 mark before the Lady Reds went on a run to lead by 15 points at halftime. The Pioneers weren’t able to cut into the deficit at all in the second half.

“We haven’t grasped the concept that in our league we have to play every night. There are no cupcakes,” added Gabbard. “We didn’t play as a team and do the things needed to win.”

Matalya McBath was the only Pioneer in double-digits with 15 points. She added four steals and has recorded two or more steals in every game this season. Ashley Browning and Megan McCrummen each added eight points. McBath, Mandy Darwin and Adriana Martin led the way on the glass with four rebounds a piece.

Next, the Pioneers play at Central Oklahoma on Jan. 15 beginning at 7:00 p.m.
