PIONEERS CONTINUE WINNING STREAK

HUNTSVILLE , Texas – The Texas Woman’s University basketball team dominated the paint and the glass to defeat Sam Houston State, 75-67, before 367 fans at Johnson Coliseum.

The Pioneers (9-3, 2-0) are in the midst of a four-game winning streak. The match-up with the Bearkats was the final non-conference game of the season for TWU.

TWU led by just two points, 29-27, at halftime. SHSU took advantage of 20 free throw attempts in the first half making 17. In the second half the Pioneers made adjustments limiting the Bearkats to just six free throws. Mandy Darwin made a lay-up with 1:34 left to play and TWU scored six unanswered points in the final minute en route to victory.

Darwin led the Pioneers with 19 points and five rebounds. She was eight of 16 from the field and three of three from the charity stripe.

“Mandy played really well. We got on our post players to have presence,” said head coach Devin Gabbard. “Mandy, Jennifer (Schilb) and Valery (Redfearn) all responded at key times.”

The Pioneers out rebounded the Bearkats, 48-28, including 18 offensive and 30 defensive caroms. Browning had a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Teneisha McKinney added eight points and eight rebounds. Matalya McBath had 15 points and five assists as well.

“Ashley played really big. She had some big defensive boards,” said Gabbard.

The Pioneers shot 44.8 percent from the field compared to 35.7 for SHSU. TWU made 26 of 58 field goals, five of 13 three-point baskets and 18 of 25 free throws.

“The big difference tonight was rebounding,” added Gabbard. “We also shot well. Our goal is 45 percent from the field and we were right there.”

The Pioneers return to action on Jan. 13 at Northeastern State for Lone Star Conference crossover play beginning at 7:00 p.m.
