McBATH SEALS WIN FOR TWU
KINGSVILLE, Texas – Matalya McBath hit three of four free throws down the stretch as Texas Woman’s University defeated Texas A&M University-Kingsville, 63-62, in Lone Star Conference South Division competition.
“The whole game was back and forth,” said head coach Devin Gabbard. “We dominated early and built a lead but tried to give it away.”
The Pioneers (8-3, 2-0) led the whole first half and built a 12-point advantage in the second. TAMUK took the lead, 56-55, with 4:35 remaining in the game and had a five-point lead before TWU answered. Adriana Martin made two free throws with 43 seconds left to put TWU back on top. Nahogany Brown attempted to tie the game but had a foot on the three-point line when she hit a long jumper with three seconds left.
“They (TAMUK) are an athletic team and we struggled against their zone defense,” added Gabbard. “It was a great game to watch but not coach.”
McBath led the way with 17 points, five assists and four rebounds. Mandy Darwin had a season-high 15 points and five rebounds. Jennifer Schilb added 10 points and six rebounds. Martin led the rebounding efforts with eight.
The Pioneers stay atop the LSC South Division standings with a perfect 2-0 record. TWU and TAMUK have played the only conference games so far this season with the rest of the league beginning next week.
TWU is off to their best start since the 1989-90 season when they were 9-2 in their first 11 games. Next, the Pioneers travel to Huntsville , Texas , to face Sam Houston State on Jan. 4 at 7:00 p.m.
