| Ceramics
The
Ceramics program teaches skills that allow
students to become increasingly self-sufficient
as artists. Once basic techniques are learned,
students are challenged to expand their notions
about how clay can be used, and understand their
reasons for expressing themselves with it. The
department is inclusive of both sculptural and
functional approaches to clay (students are
expected to develop a full vocabulary of skills
before focusing on any particular one). Basic
skills that are taught include throwing,
handbuilding, moldmaking, clay and glaze
chemistry, kiln building, and a wide variety of
firing and surfacing methods.
