Undergraduate Program in
Sociology |
|
The Department of Sociology and Social Work offers a Bachelor of Arts
(B.A.) and a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Sociology. We also
offer graduate work leading to the M.A. and PhD in Sociology. |
|
A typical degree plan for
sociology students at TWU has four parts: core curriculum requirements, requirements
for the major, courses in a minor area and electives. Sociology students take
42 hours in courses common to all students who are pursuing a bachelor's degree
in the arts or sciences. Sociology majors pursuing a Bachelor of Science
degree take additional core curriculum courses in literature, foreign language,
and computer science; while students pursuing a Bachelor or Arts degree
will take these courses plus additional hours in foreign languages, history
and/or fine arts. A detailed list of course requirements for the B.A. and B.S.
degrees in sociology is available by clicking on the links to your right.

What is Sociology?
Sociology is the study of social
life, social change, and the social causes and consequences of human behavior.
The subject matter of sociology ranges from the intimate family to the giant corporation,
from organized crime to religious cults, from the differences of race, gender
and social class to the shared experiences of a common culture, and from the sociology
of work to the sociology of play.

Why Study Sociology?
Sociologists seek to understand
people by studying the societies and groups in which they live. Sociologists
are interested in the impact that the social environment has on our behavior
from infancy to old age. Sociology is a dynamic, ever changing and exciting
discipline with opportunities for a variety of career pathways.
A major in sociology will prepare you for the job market as well as for further
study leading to graduate and professional degrees
