The Doctor of Philosophy degree in sociology is designed to allow maximum flexibility
in meeting individual needs while providing solid grounding in the core areas
of research methods and sociological theory.

PH.D. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
|
|
For unconditional admission to the Ph.D. program in sociology the applicant
must have a master's degree; must have completed a minimum of 12-18 prior hours
of sociology, at least three graduate semester hours in research methods and
three graduate semester hours in statistics, and must have at least a 3.5 (B+)
average for master's courses. The GRE is required. International students must
have a satisfactory score on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
Three letters of reference and a personal essay are also required.
For conditional admission, the applicant must have a master's degree and at
least a 3.0 (B) average for all master's credit. The GRE is required. Three
letters of reference and a personal essay are also required. Additional coursework
may be required when the applicant has fewer than the required hours and courses
needed for unconditional admission. The admission committee may request additional
evidence of the applicant's ability to do graduate work.

DEGREE REQUIREMENTS
|
To meet degree requirements a student must choose a concentration from one
of the following three areas:
- Social organization/disorganization
- Family and life cycle
- Metropolitan community/urban sociology
A concentration in a second of these areas, or in a field outside of sociology,
is also required for the Doctor of Philosophy degree.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS
|
|
Students must complete a minimum of 60 hours of course work beyond a master's
degree or students must complete a minimum of 90 hours of course work beyond
a bachelor's degree.
Minimum course requirements in the following areas are
- 12 hours in methods and statistics
- 12 hours in sociological theory
- 12 hours in a major concentration
- 12 hours in a minor concentration
- 12 hours of dissertation
- 9 hours of research tools

SUPPLEMENTAL TRAINING
Students at TWU and UNT with an interest in practice may supplement their training
in academic sociology with selected courses from such applied areas as criminal
justice, emergency management, rehabilitation, addiction studies, and gerontology,
which are available through the School of Community Service at UNT.
COSTS AND FINANCIAL AID
Tuition costs at TWU and UNT are among the lowest in the nation. At present
the cost of tuition and fees for nine-hour loads ranges from approximately $2110*
for two semesters for Texas residents to $6350 for out-of-state students.
Opportunities for professional growth and for financial support income are available
through a limited numb er of teaching fellowships and assistantships, research
assistantships, and internships.
