The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science offers an academic program designed to prepare students for careers in mathematics, computer science and related fields in business, industry or government or for further graduate studies. Preparing future teachers of mathematics or computer science for our public schools is a special strength of the department. Undergraduate majors and minors are offered in both mathematics and computer science. Graduate programs leading to the Master of Science or Master of Arts in Mathematics and the Master of Science in Mathematics Teaching are available.

Students work closely with faculty in a small class environment. Students in our mathematics program have access to high-end computer labs equipped with a variety of computer programs including current mathematical software programs such as MAPLE or Geometer's Sketchpad. Students in our computer science program have the opportunity to work with the most current hardware and software. Students will work on PC's running Windows XP as well as Sun Microsystems computers running Unix. Students will learn Visual Basic, C++, and Java as well as learning about data base systems, networks, and web development.

Special programs are available for students interested in engineering careers. These include a 3+2/Dual Degree agreement with the University of North Texas that allows students to simultaneously earn a bachelor's degree in mathematics from TWU and an electrical engineering degree from UNT. A second program provides students with majors in computer science or mathematics a "fast track" to a master's degree in electrical engineering at Texas Tech University. Scholarships and internships at Texas Instruments are available for students interested in these programs.
