REFERENCES
Many prospective employers will request a
list of references. Usually three to
six references will be enough. The
people included in the list of references should have had enough contact with
you to be able to make an honest recommendation. The best references for students in college or those graduating
from college are current and former employers, and faculty members. Inappropriate references are relatives,
physicians, clergy members, and friends.
Do not place a person's name on a list of
references without first asking him/her if they will act as a reference for
you--someone may say no! Do not wait
until the last minute to contact people whose names you want to use as your
references. Explain what you need and
the type of job for which you are applying.
For any person on your list of references, you must be very certain as
to the type of reference that person will give you.
To prepare a reference list, use the same
letterhead that you use for your resume and cover letter. For each reference, be sure and include the
person's name, title, mailing address, telephone number, and email address.
