Scholarships
The Department
annually awards a number of scholarships which have been made
possible by generous friends and supporters of The Department of
English, Speech, and Foreign Languages. Information packets and
application forms are available from the Department early in each
spring semester. Although awards change from year to year, below is
a listing of some of the scholarships available. For more

Department at TWU.
Mabel F. Arbuthnot Endowed Scholarship. Given annually to a student
who has demonstrated exceptional ability in French class(es)
completed at TWU. Professors in French will recommend the award from
the pool of applicants based on class average and evaluation of
practical performance.
Sharon Loretta Brocker Endowed Scholarship. Given annually to a
superior graduate student in English.
Roberta Clay Memorial Scholarship Fund. Awarded to an English major.
English and Speech Endowed Scholarship. Awarded to students enrolled
in English or speech classes who have excelled academically, have
demonstrated some financial need, and/or have contributed to the
whole academic community.
Maurine Faulkner Endowed Scholarship. Shared with the Departments of
Mathematics and Nutrition and Food Sciences. This award honors an
outstanding student in Spanish. In addition to having maintained an
overall GPA of 3.0, the recipient will have maintained a 3.5 in
Spanish coursework completed at TWU. Preference is given to the
student who has demonstrated exceptional written and oral skills.
Lavon B. Fulwiler Endowed Scholarship. Awarded annually. When
accrual of interest on endowment funds permits, two scholarships may
be granted in a given year. Each recipient may be either (1) a
graduate student majoring in English enrolled in TWU at the time the
scholarship is granted with preference given to the student who is
specializing in Middle English literature or English Romantic
literature, or (2) a junior or senior English major who has
manifested superior ability and achievement in the field of English.
The recipient of this award should have completed at least one full
semester or one full summer session (two consecutive summer terms of
study) and a minimum of nine semester hours of credit at TWU the
semester before the scholarship is awarded. In addition to
maintaining an overall GPA of 3.0, the recipient(s) should have
maintained a GPA of 3.5 in all English courses. Submission of a
paper in the appropriate field is required.
Mariah Heatherton Memorial Award. Preference will be given to a
returning graduate student who is coming back to school from
professional life and work.
Dr. Les Kreps Endowed Scholarship. Awarded to an English major
enrolled at TWU at the time the scholarship is granted who is a
graduate student unconditionally admitted to an MA degree program or
to the PhD degree program (preference is given to an applicant who
has maintained superior ability or strong interest in rhetoric) or
to a junior or senior undergraduate English major, or an
undergraduate speech student who has demonstrated in both oral and
written forms a superior understanding of rhetorical principles and
practices. Applicants shall have completed at least one full
semester during an academic long session or one full summer session
(two consecutive summer terms) of study and a minimum of nine
semester hours' credit at TWU before the beginning of the semester
in which the scholarship is awarded. A minimum GP of 3.2 in all
English and speech courses is required. The applicant must provide
two letters of recommendation from faculty whose courses they have
taken.
Language and Literature Scholarship. Awarded to students enrolled in
language or literature classes, respectively, who have excelled
academically.
JoAn Rutledge McDaniel Endowed Scholarship. Given to an
undergraduate English major or to an undergraduate studying in
speech.
Ada Cade McCurry and Martha Faye McCurry Savage Endowed Scholarship.
Awarded annually to an English major or certification student
according to criteria determined by the departmental Scholarship and
Awards Committee.
Rebecca Switzer Award. Given to assist deserving students for study
in Mexico. The student(s) should have completed a minimum of two
years of Spanish courses at TWU. The recipient(s) of this award will
consult with the Chair of the Department of English, Speech, and
Foreign Languages and with the Spanish faculty to implement this
award.
Joyce Thompson Memorial Scholarship. Awarded annually to an English
major. Preference will be given to graduate students. Submission of
a critical or scholarly paper is required.
Clarice Mixon Turner Endowed Scholarship. Awarded annually to an
advanced or graduate English major. The recipient(s) of this award
should have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 and 3.5 in English. The
recipient must be enrolled as a full-time student at TWU. Submission
of a research or scholarly paper is required.
Autrey Nell Wiley Endowed Scholarship. Awarded annually to the
doctoral student who has amassed the highest number of grade points
(not necessarily the highest grade point average) during the past
calendar year (grades for spring semester, summer sessions, and fall
semester since the previous granting of the award).
