Programs of Study

The English, Speech, and Foreign Languages Department at Texas Woman's University offer several programs of study for students. The Department offers courses of study that lead toward an undergraduate minor, teacher certification, and bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees. Below is a brief overview of each.

  • Students may pursue minors in English and Spanish, providing further intensive study in a field that may complement their major field.

  • Students may pursue a BA in English, which provides a broad overview of English and American literature, as well as writing and linguistics, preparing students for careers in editing, teaching, writing, or for further studies at the graduate level.
  • Students may pursue Teacher Certification, completing a course of study in English, as well as a minor in education, preparing them to teach English in grades 8-12.
  • Students may pursue an MA in English, with three options available (thesis, professional paper, or coursework only), each of which provide deeper training in literary studies, as well as additional training toward work as a professional in the field.
  • Students may pursue a PhD in Rhetoric, with core foci in History of Rhetoric and Composition Pedagogy, along with a third student-determined focus in a related field, preparing students for careers in writing, research, teaching, and more.
