Guidelines and Curriculum for the Ph.D. in Rhetoric

 


Intro Page Admission Requirements Student Objectives


»    Only coursework completed with a 'B' or better may apply toward completion of the doctoral degree; in addition, doctoral students are expected to maintain at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA.

»    All requirements toward a doctoral degree, aside form a completed master's degree, must be completed with in a period of ten consecutive calendar years from the date doctoral credit is first earned.

»    Residency: Students are strongly encouraged to enroll in full time courses for at least two consecutive semesters.

»    Students must complete 90 credit hours (including 12 dissertation hours) beyond the baccalaureate (6 to 9 hours may be taken toward a minor)

»    Curriculum

o        Rhetoric Core

»         ENG 5343. Rhetoric and Composition: Theory and Practice

»         ENG 5353. Rhetoric and Composition: Theory and Pedagogy of Electronic Texts

»         ENG 6203: History of Rhetoric I

»         ENG 6213: History of Rhetoric II

»         Electives: 6 hours (in consultation with the student’s advisor)

o        Literature Component: At least 18 hours

o        Linguistics Component: At least 3 hours

o        Literary Theory Component: Minimum of 3 hours

o        Dissertation: Minimum of 12 hours

o        Electives: The remaining required hours (of 90 beyond the baccalaureate) will be chosen in consultation with the student's advisor)

»    Students will complete Qualifying Examinations (given only in April and November each year) in three content areas (historical/theoretical rhetoric, applied rhetoric, and an elective area)

»    Students will write a dissertation, followed by a defense and final examination
