The English, Speech & Foreign Language Departmental Pages

The Department of English, Speech & Foreign Languages draws on the resources of its diverse faculty and staff to offer a variety of services to its students. We offer a series of writing, literature, foreign language, and other courses for non-majors and majors, as well as English language courses for international students. In addition, we offer several programs of study, including minors in English and Spanish, teacher certification, Bachelor's and Master's degrees in English, and a Ph.D. in Rhetoric. Our activities in our classes, in the Write Site, and in our organizations, reflect our commitment to preparing and empowering students for active engagement in our society's discourses.

Whether through the core curriculum or through work towards the degrees offered by the department, the courses and activities in our department are designed to provide students with the opportunity to understand and engage ethnically and culturally diverse discourses. We strive to help our students develop skills in written and oral communication, as well as in critical thinking,

so that they may effectively and responsibly engage these discourses, not only in our courses, but in all their university courses and beyond their time in college. We challenge our students, even in our first year composition courses, to recognize the value of their own voice and to develop their abilities to exercise their right to use that voice effectively and responsibly.

In this area of our site, you will find information about the department itself, from a history of the department, to contact information, to faculty pages, and information about departmental courses, organizations, and scholarships.
