Ms. Lillie V. Tucker-Akin
Outstanding Science Educator * Educational Consultant * Philanthropist
Ms. Lillie Tucker-Akin earned a bachelor’s degree with a major in nutrition and food science under her mentor Dr. Pauline Berry Mack. She later earned a master’s degree in science education from the University of Mississippi and has done extensive coursework in chemistry education in several universities. For the past 19 years she has served as a senior science consultant with School Specialty and Delta Education. Ms. Tucker-Aiken served for 35 years as a classroom science teacher and has focused on the preparation of science teachers. She has been the co-director of a National Science Foundation project Chemistry for Teachers; director of a state project Operation Chemistry; director and consultant for Physical Science for Elementary Teachers; director of Building a Presence for Science for Mississippi; and a senior consultant for the Academy for Science Teaching. Her leadership roles include: President of the Mississippi Science Teachers Association, President of the National Council of Associated Science Teacher’s Organizations and Groups, and district representative for the National Science Teachers Association. She has authored two books and starred in a national science staff-development series produced by Southeastern Regional Consortium and Educational Television. Her talents have been recognized by many awards, predominantly for teaching excellence. Early in her career, Ms. Tucker-Akin sang with the Minneapolis Opera and was a couturier model for Sakowitz, the White House, and Nieman Marcus. She has been a generous donor of science equipment to poor schools in the Delta and to Jackson State University to found a science teacher resource center.
