Approval Processes for Core Curriculum or Global Perspectives Courses

Previously approved core courses – expedited review

Send a memo only to the Office of Undergraduate Studies (Dr. Bean’s office) naming the course for consideration by the Core Curriculum Task Force and describing how the course will teach and test the new educational outcomes established for multicultural women’s studies or global perspectives.

 New core course approval process – full review

  1. Be sure the course has been approved for TWU curriculum inventory by the University Curriculum Committee.
  1. Review the “Educational Objectives” for global perspectives or the core area in which you wish to have a course included. These are available online in the Core Curriculum area of the Academic Affairs website.

        The core areas include:

    1. communications,
    2. math,
    3. natural sciences
    4. humanities & visual and performing arts,
    5. social sciences,
    6. multicultural women’s studies

  1. Prepare a syllabus that shows how the educational outcomes for the core area will be taught and tested.   IF DESIRED, send the proposed syllabus for preview via email to jbean@twu.edu.
  1. Compose a letter stating which core area or global perspectives the course is proposed for and describing how the course provides clear evidence that educational outcomes are being taught and tested and evidence of instruction in core’s basic intellectual competencies.
  1. Send 12 copies of the letter and proposed syllabus to the Office of Undergraduate Studies (Dr. Bean’s office) for consideration by the Core Curriculum Task Force.
  1. Deadlines for approval:

Note that courses must be approved for the core or global perspectives before they can be listed in the Schedule of Classes as meeting core requirements.  For example, to be included in the Fall 2008 Schedule of Classes courses would have to be submitted to the Core Curriculum Task Force (or its successor) in Fall 2007 to meet the Feb. 1, 2008 Schedule of Classes publishing deadline.  Courses approved later may be designated as core approved on the TWU internet lists of classes.

  1. Criteria for approval:

    2. Schedule of activities that demonstrates adequate time devoted to teaching and testing the outcomes;
