Freshman
Identify your college adviser. Make an appointment to talk with your adviser. This is your responsibility.
If you are a new Student at TWU with fewer than 12 hours you will need to attend New Student Orientation offered prior to each semester and several times during the summer. Advising for the next semester is part of Orientation.
Meet your college adviser. If you are not compatible or you are not being helped to your satisfaction, request a change in advisers.
Furnish results and/or completion of Texas Success Initiative to your college adviser.
Get acquainted with campus services that can assist you with academic plans or problems:
Enroll in UNIV 1011. This course teaches you the skills that will enhance your chances of reaching your academic goals. It's worth your time.
Visit Career Services in the Human Development Building (HDB 200). It's never too early to begin career planning.
- Consider the Honors Program
- Consider participating in the NET program.
Pace yourself and vary your courses so you not only meet academic goals, but also take subjects that introduce you to other fields.
Sophomore
Make an appointment with your academic adviser.
Review the TWU catalog information about your major and check with the department for any course or program changes that may have occurred during the past year.
Identify any course content that may have been particularly difficult during your freshman year. Ask yourself these questions:
- Am I prepared to advance to the next level?
- Do I need to seek additional assistance in this area?
- Are there related subjects that could increase my understanding of this material?
Identify any course content in which you excelled during your Freshman year. Ask yourself these questions:
- Do my academic goals reflect my academic strengths? Interests?
- Do I need to reassess my academic and career goals? (Try to complete the university-wide core requirements this year if your major is designed to accomplish this. In cooperation with your adviser, decide which courses you lack. Map out a feasible, achievable plan to complete them.)
Junior
Make an appointment with your departmental adviser.
Finalize your degree plans for graduation. Determine what courses are required to graduate with a degree in your major. Find out what, if any, courses can be substituted. Are there any electives to be scheduled?
File your degree plan for audit with the Registrar’s Office.
Evaluate possible graduate programs or career goals that have specific pre-requisites. This includes the GRE, GMAT, MCAT and other exams.
Contact Career Services for assistance with employment opportunities, both now and in the future.
Senior
Make an appointment with your departmental adviser.
If you have not already done so, file your degree plan for audit with the Registrar’s Office.
Prepare for graduation: Apply for your diploma, order academic regalia, etc.
Contact Career Services for information about Career Days, employment/interview/resume skills and register with TWU Placement Service.
