student awarded Javits Fellowship

DENTON —Jose
Zamora, a master of fine arts student in dance at Texas Woman’s
University, has been awarded a 2008-09 Jacob K. Javits Fellowship.
Mr. Zamora is one of only 30 university students in the United
States, and one of two in Texas, to receive the fellowship,
which covers tuition and fees and provides up to $30,000 a
year for living expenses.
“This award means that I no longer have to worry about being able to pay for school without going into more debt,” said Mr. Zamora, of McAllen. “It also re-energizes a belief in myself, in my own talent, and in my abilities as a dance academic.”
The U.S. Department of Education awards the fellowship to students at the master of fine arts or doctoral level in selected fields of arts, humanities and social sciences. Recipients are selected on the basis of demonstrated achievement, financial need and exceptional promise. Recipients may receive the award annually for up to 48 months or through the completion of their degree.
“Having a TWU student named a Javits Fellow validates the richness of this university,” TWU Chancellor Ann Stuart said. “We are an outstanding health sciences university, and one equally dedicated to the arts and sciences.”
Mr. Zamora began the second year of his three-year graduate program this fall. He can expect to receive the fellowship until he completes his MFA in May 2010.
Mary Williford-Shade, professor of dance at TWU, encouraged Mr. Zamora to apply for the fellowship.
“Jose has the potential to become an important artist in the 21st century,” she said. “He is one who lives the conviction that the arts offer vast opportunities for creative expression, self-discovery and healing. Words cannot communicate how excited I am about Jose being awarded this fellowship.”
Mr. Zamora plans to create his own dance company after graduation, then eventually become a dance professor.
