“The Power of a Healthy Woman Symposium” presented
at TWU Sept. 20

DENTON —
Providing tools that incorporate wellness strategies into
daily life is the focus of an upcoming symposium at Texas
Woman’s University. Adult women are encouraged to attend
and bring their mothers, sisters and high school age daughters
(juniors and seniors) to the half-day event that shines the
spotlight on women’s health.
“The Power
of a Healthy Woman Symposium” will be held from 8:30
a.m. until 12:15 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20 in room 202 of the
Classroom and Faculty Office Building (CFO). For a map of

Registration is $10, or $15 for two participants from the
same household. Space is limited and the registration deadline
is Friday, Sept 12. For more information, go to www.twu.edu/lifelong

Major sponsorship for the symposium is provided by The Foundation
for Exxcellence in Women’s Healthcare. Other sponsors
include the TWU Institute for Women’s Health, the TWU
Leadership Institute, the North Texas Hospital, the Denton
Regional Medical Foundation, the Dr Pepper Company, the Denton
County Medical Society Alliance, Solis Women’s Health
and AgriLIFE Extension-Denton County.
TWU alumna Deborah Kern, Ph.D., is the keynote speaker for
the workshop. Formerly executive director of Lifestyle Enrichment
at the prestigious Lake Austin Spa Resort, Dr. Kern is an
internationally acclaimed speaker on women’s health
and has served on advisory boards to the National Speaking
of Women’s Health Foundation and National Wellness Association.
She is the author of “Everyday Wellness for Women”
and co-author of “Create the Body Your Soul Desires:
The Friendship Solution to Weight, Energy and Sexuality.”
Dr. Kern studied nursing at Vanderbilt University, received
her bachelor’s and MBA degrees from the University of
Texas at Austin and obtained her doctorate in health studies
from TWU.
Featured speakers include: Eve Essery, Ph.D., a TWU alumna,
who is currently a fellow with the Office of Disease Prevention
and Health Promotion in Washington, D.C.; Salman Malik, M.D.,
a Denton cardiologist and medical director for the TWU Institute
for Women’s Health; Charlotte (Barney) Sanborn, Ph.D.,
chair of the TWU department of kinesiology; and Janelle Walker,
MBA, the market director for Premier Banking and Investments
for Bank of America Global Wealth and Investment Management.
