TWU Drama presents ‘Proof’

DENTON — The Texas Woman’s University Drama Program brings David Auburn’s award-winning drama “Proof” to the stage of the Redbud Theater Complex Feb. 28 through March 2.
Performances will be at 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28; 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Feb. 29 and March 1; and 2 p.m. Sunday, March 2. The Redbud Theater Complex is located on the northwest side of historic Hubbard Hall on TWU’s Denton campus. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. “Proof,” winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and a Tony Award for Best Play in 2001, centers on Catherine (Samantha Bianchini of Keller), a young woman who had been caring for her father, Robert (Dan Pucul of Sherman), a brilliant mathematician who had struggled with mental illness before his recent death. Catherine worries that she not only inherited some of her father’s mathematical genius, but his mental instability as well.
Catherine must deal not only with her sister, Claire (Georgana Jinks of Sachse), who wants to take Catherine to New York — possibly to a mental institution — but also with Hal (Tristan Decker of Fort Worth), a former student of Robert’s who comes to examine her father’s papers, hoping to find one last, undiscovered piece of genius.
A romance develops between Hal and Catherine, but when Hal finds a notebook containing an important mathematical discovery, Catherine claims to have written it. Her words are met with skepticism from not only Hal, but by Claire as well.
Sharon Benge, director of TWU’s drama program, directs the production. Christina Williams of Austin designed the set as her final thesis project for her master’s degree. Former TWU student James Gregory of Garland serves as lighting designer, and TWU master’s degree candidate Susan Serota of Corpus Christi is the costume designer. Stage manager Kami Rogers of San Angelo is assisted by Taylor Reed of Denton.
