TWU’s Sheppard appointed to AAUW Student Advisory Council

DENTON —
Jacqueline Sheppard, a junior psychology major at Texas Woman’s
University, recently was appointed to the Student Advisory
Council of the American Association of University Women (AAUW).
Ms. Sheppard, of Denton, is the only student from the southwestern
United States to be appointed to the council.
The AAUW Student
Advisory Council is a national coalition of student leaders
that advises the AAUW on strategies for the future of young
women and girls. Council members write for the student e-bulletin,
“AAUW Students Speak Out,” make program recommendations,
develop workshops and introduce speakers for the National
Conference for College Women Student Leaders.
“I enjoy
being involved with something that impacts women,” Ms.
Sheppard said. “I like that I have a voice that actually
matters.”
Amy Parsons-O’Keefe,
director of TWU Commuter Services, encouraged Ms. Sheppard
to apply for the council post. “When I first met Jacqueline
on campus, I was struck by both her leadership potential and
her ambition,” Ms. Parsons-O’Keefe said. “I
knew she would personally benefit from contact with other
talented students from across the country. The AAUW is committed
to hearing the voices of all university women, and Jacqueline,
as a student parent, represents voices not often heard.”
Ms. Sheppard, a
2001 graduate of Fred Moore High School in Denton, has worked
as a part-time nanny since December 2001. It’s a job
that allows her to bring along her 4-year-old son, Michael.
She also works part-time for TWU Athletics. Ms. Sheppard is
a member of Psi Chi, the National Honor Society in Psychology,
and is a student affiliate of the American Psychological Association.
She also has been accepted to the Monster Diversity Leadership
Program this summer.
