TWU student selected
as Phi Kappa Phi Award of Excellence recipient

DENTON —
Texas Woman’s University student Abigail Leddy of Maypearl
recently was selected as an Award of Excellence recipient
by The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi for the 2007-2008 academic
year. Ms. Leddy is among only 100 students nationwide to receive
this honor, which includes a $2,000 stipend.
Ms. Leddy will
graduate from TWU in August with a degree in biology and a
minor in chemistry. She holds a 4.0 grade point average and
plans to pursue her doctorate in physical therapy at Washington
University in St. Louis beginning in the fall.
“It is a
great honor to receive this award,” Ms. Leddy said.
“It will help me pursue my graduate career in physical
therapy and enable me to have more time for research.”
Ms. Leddy is in
the TWU Honors Scholar program and was selected as a member
of the TWU Phi Kappa Phi chapter in 2006. She also was named
to the TWU Dean’s List from 2004 to 2007 and the National
Dean’s List from 2004 to 2006. As her high school’s
valedictorian, Ms. Leddy received the TWU Presidential Scholarship,
which covered her tuition and fees while at TWU. She also
has received scholarships from the TWU Former Students Association,
Global Expertise and Outsourcing and Texas Industries
Ms. Leddy is active
in numerous organizations, including the Pre-Physical Therapy
Club, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, the TWU chapters
of the Texas Recycling and Environmentally Ethical Students
(TREES) and Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA).
She also has worked on numerous research projects, including
two presentations at the TWU 2006 Creative Arts and Research
Symposium — “None But the Brave Can Eat the Fare:
The Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906” and “Actin
Filament Content in Navigating Neuronal Growth Cones.”
“Abi is an
outstanding, well-rounded student and excellent researcher,”
said Dr. DiAnna L. Hynds, assistant professor of biology at
TWU. “I expect her to excel in her graduate work and
career, and to be at the forefront of advances in her field.”
Since its creation
in 1932, the Fellowship Program has become one of the Phi
Kappa Phi Honor Society's most visible and financially well-supported
endeavors, allocating nearly $380,000 annually to deserving
students for first-year graduate study. Currently, 60 Fellowships
of $5,000 and 40 Awards of Excellence of $2,000 are awarded
each year.
Founded in 1897
and headquartered in Baton Rouge, La., Phi Kappa Phi is the
nation’s oldest, largest and most selective all-discipline
honor society. Phi Kappa Phi inducts annually more than 30,000
students, faculty, professional staff and alumni. The Society
has chapters at nearly 300 select colleges and universities
in North America and the Philippines. Membership is by invitation
only to the top 10 percent of seniors and graduate students
and 7.5 percent of juniors. Faculty, professional staff and
alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction also qualify.
