TWU’s sixth
annual Joyce Elaine Grant Photography Exhibition begins Jan.
23

— Texas Woman’s University will host the sixth
annual Joyce Elaine Grant Juried Photography Exhibition Jan.
23 through Feb. 16, with an opening reception scheduled from
4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23. Both the reception and
the exhibition are free and open to the public.
The
events will take place in TWU’s Fine Arts Galleries
at the corner of Texas and Oakland streets on TWU’s
Denton campus. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through
Friday and on weekends by appointment. For more information,

Katherine
Ware, curator of photographs at the Philadelphia Museum of
Art’s Alfred Stieglitz Center for Photography in the
Department of Prints, Drawings and Photographs, will serve
as this year’s exhibition juror.
This
year’s exhibition award winners are Bremner Benedict,
solo show; Susan Bank, $500 cash award; Priya Kambi, Coupralux
fine art digital printing materials award; and Jessamyn Lovell,
the Cannon printer award from Red River Paper.
The
work of Jessica Cook, winner of last year’s exhibition,
will be shown in the East Gallery, opposite the Joyce Elaine
Grant Exhibition. Ms. Cook, who currently resides in Austin,
has exhibited her work in Chicago, Houston and in many shows
in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. She has received several awards,
including two Society for Photographic Education National
Scholarships, a Houston Center for Photography Fellowship
and a Waco Advertising Group Gold Award for Photography. She
received her bachelor of fine arts degree from Baylor University
and her master of fine arts from the University of North Texas.
Ms.
Cook’s work, titled “The Newly Weds,” follows
the interactions of eight longtime friends from East Texas
during the past six years. Six of the women are now married,
and many of the reunions between the friends have been for
wedding-related events. Ms. Cook has photographed the interactions
of these friends and their changing relationships over the
years.
“I
have observed and recorded how these women’s identities
articulate and emerge through the body language and expressions
used in their interaction with one another and with the camera,”
Ms. Cook said. “I have been fascinated with how their
body language can be contingent on location and occasion,
and on how different facets of their personalities become
more and less apparent in contrasting environments.”
The
Joyce Elaine Grant exhibition and endowment was established
by a small group of TWU graduate students and is named in
memory of the mother of TWU photography professor Susan kae
Grant. Exhibition proceeds will help fund the Joyce Elaine
Grant Photography Exhibition Endowment, which will fund scholarships
for future graduate students in TWU’s Department of
Visual Arts.
