Angie Galvis is first Colombian woman to receive a Ph.D. in
Occupational Therapy

DENTON —
When Angie Galvis accepted her doctoral degree in occupational
therapy from Texas Woman’s University on May 12, she
made history as the first Colombian woman to receive a Ph.D.
in occupational therapy.
“I know of
two other women in graduate school for occupational therapy,”
said Dr. Galvis, who lives in Carrollton. “However,
I am the first woman from my country to receive a Ph.D. in
the field. I am so happy and proud.”
Dr. Galvis received
her undergraduate degree in occupational therapy in Colombia
before obtaining a student visa to come to TWU to pursue graduate
studies in 2002. She chose to study at TWU because the university’s
doctoral program in occupational therapy is the only Ph.D.
program in the field in the in the western United States.
“I like
that it was a small university with caring faculty,”
Dr. Galvis said. “From the beginning the people in the
occupational therapy department were extremely helpful and
worked with me to ensure I would receive my doctorate.”
Dr. Galvis’
doctoral thesis was on the use of computers versus lecture
as an instructional tool to teach occupational therapy students.
She currently is employed with Therapy 2000 and specializes
in home-care therapy for pediatric patients. In addition to
her ongoing therapy work, Dr. Galvis also would like to teach
at the university level.
“Completing
my degree hasn’t sunk in yet,” Dr. Galvis said.
“I am happy to be finished and look forward to my future.”
