Smart Views are customized views of Grade Center. Smart Views can be used for tracking performance or for organizing groups of students. You can also use Smart Views to select a Group in the course. Once created and saved, you are able to navigate from one view to another with a single click. Smart Views can also be saved as the default Grade Center view. There are four default Smart Views: Course Group, Performance, User, and Category and Status. You can also create a Custom Smart View combining elements from all of these. For purposes of this resource, we will discuss Group, Performance, and User Smart Views.

Smart Views for Management

Super Section with Groups for Original Sections

If you combine sections, one management strategy is to create a group for each original section. You could use the Group Smart Views to create separate Smart Views for each group. When final grades are due, you should be able to pull up each group (original section) and report grades by those sections.

Large Section with Multiple GAs

If you have GAs with grading responsibilities, you could create Smart Views for each GA showing only their assigned students. If you assigned groups, use the Groups Smart View. If you assigned individual students, use the User Smart View. GAs would only see the names of the students assigned to them.

Tracking Student Performance on a MidTerm

The Performance Smart View type allows you to select a benchmarking number and will filter all students on a single gradable item.
