Because passing the TExES exams is a state requirement for teaching certification, students in the teacher education program are encouraged to take their exams as early as possible. Each student in the teacher education program must complete three requirements in regard to the TExES exams before being approved to student teach. These are described below along with the steps involved in completing each requirement.

1. Complete six clock hours of TExES exam preparation
  • Use the resources of the TExES PREP Center
  • Documentation can be obtained from the TExES PREP Center

    2. Register for and take the state content TExES exam
  • Be admitted to teacher education
  • Take a practice TExES exam through TWU
  • Obtain approval from your department
  • Send an e-mail to Student Support with your name, TWU ID and exam to be taken
  • NOTE: Students in the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program are not required to take a practice exam prior to receiving approval to take their content TExES exam. Approval to take that exam is given when students are admitted to the MAT program. However, MAT students do need to take a practice exam prior to taking the PPR or any supplemental TExES exams.

    3. Register for and take the state PPR TExES exam

  • Be admitted to teacher education
  • Take the practice TExES PPR exam in EDUC 3003
  • Send an e-mail to Student Support with your name, TWU ID and exam to be taken

The three requirements above must be documented in the professional portfolio each student must complete before being approved to student teach. For more detailed information about these three requirements click here.
