PROGRAM ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS*

Child Development – MS

  1. Student’s Grade Point Average
    For admission to master’s study, the last 60 hours of undergraduate and/or graduate work is used to calculate a GPA. The Child Development master’s requires a minimum GPA of 3.0 for admission consideration.

Child Development – PhD

  1. Student’s Grade Point Average
    For admission to the Child Development doctoral program, the applicant’s final GPA on their master’s work must be 3.0 or higher for admission consideration.
    GRE (Graduate Record Examination)
  2. For admission to the doctoral program in Child Development (PhD) acquisition of a competitive GRE score is required. Successful candidates for admission have had scores of 500 (verbal) and 500 (quantitative). An appeal process is available for prospective students whose combined GRE scores range from 750 – 999.

Counseling and Development – Community Counseling - M.S.
Counseling and Development – School Counseling – M.S.
Dual Degree Counseling and Development and Music
(Required courses for professional licensure or School Counselor certification are also offered).

  1. Student’s Grade Point Average
    For admission to master’s study, the last 60 hours of undergraduate and/or graduate work is used to calculate a GPA. The Counseling and Development program requires a minimum GPA of 3.0 for admission consideration.
  2. Students applying for “certification only” in Counseling and Development must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on their master’s degree for admission consideration.
  3. Counseling and Development (including “certification only”) requires a successful rating on an interview with program faculty. Applicants will be contacted about interviews after their application.

Early Childhood Education - M.Ed.

  1. Student’s Grade Point Average
    For admission to master’s study, the last 60 hours of undergraduate and/or graduate work is used to calculate a GPA.  Early Childhood Education requires a minimum GPA of 3.0 for consideration of admission.

Early Childhood Education - Ed.D.

  1. Student’s Grade Point Average
    For admission to the Child Development doctoral program, the applicant’s final GPA on their master’s work must be 3.0 or higher for admission consideration.
  2. GRE (Graduate Record Examination)
    For admission to the doctoral program in Early Childhood Education (Ed.D.) acquisition of a competitive GRE score is required. Successful candidates for admission have had scores of 500 (verbal) and 500 (quantitative). An appeal process is available for prospective students whose combined GRE scores range from 750 – 999.
  3. Admission to the doctoral program in Early Childhood Education (Ed.D) has the following additional requirements:
    • Three years of teaching experience, two of which must have been with young children.
    • Three letters of recommendation.

Family Studies – M.S.

  1. Student’s Grade Point Average
    For admission to master’s study, the last 60 hours of undergraduate and/or graduate work is used to calculate a GPA.  Family Studies program requires a minimum GPA of 3.0 for admission consideration.
  2. Scholarly writing sample required. Information on scholarly writing sample follows.
  3. Non-degree seeking status is not allowed; admission to the program is required before earning credit towards the degree.

Family Studies – Ph.D.

  1. Student’s Grade Point Average
    For admission to the Family Studies doctoral program, the applicant’s final GPA on their master’s work must be 3.0 or higher for admission consideration.
  2. Admission to Family Studies requires a successful rating on a scholarly writing sample on one of the following topics:
    • Describe three issues facing families in the global village.
    • Compare and contrast family life or a specific family issue in the U.S. and one of the following nations: Brazil, China, or India.
    • Apply the concept of resilience to parenting.
    • Discuss adaptability in terms of family composition in contemporary America.
    • Impact of individuals longevity on families.

Scholarly writing samples of approximately 700-1000 words, using recent references (since year 2000) should follow APA (5th Edition) guidelines for citations and format. For guidelines, consult

Family Therapy - M.S.

  1. Student’s Grade Point Average
    For admission to master’s study, the last 60 hours of undergraduate and/or graduate work is used to calculate a GPA. Family Therapy requires a minimum GPA of 3.25 in the last 60 hours of study for admission consideration.
  2. Family Therapy requires the successful completion of the Applicant Interview Day. The day includes
    writing an essay on an assigned topic, a therapist – client role play, and a small group interview with faculty.
  3. All application materials must be processed by the Graduate School and received in the Department of Family Sciences by the following deadlines to be invited to the Applicant Interview Day.

Fall 2007     February 15, 2007
Spring 2008    September 15, 2007

Family Therapy – Ph.D.

  1. Student’s Grade Point Average
    For admission to the Family Therapy doctoral program, the applicant’s final GPA on their master’s work must be 3.25 or higher for admission consideration.
  2. Family Therapy requires a successful rating on an interview with program faculty.  Applicants will be
    contacted about interviews after their applications are completed and have been reviewed by program faculty.
  3. All application materials must be processed by the Graduate School and received in the Department of Family Sciences by the following deadlines to be invited to the Applicant Interview Day.

Fall 2007     February 15, 2007
Spring 2008    September 15, 2007

* Meeting the minimum criteria does not guarantee admission to a particular program.

Working directly with the Department

The Department of Family Sciences will send a print packet upon request. (See phone and e-mail contact below.)

The enrollment packet includes the Graduate Application form as well as information about all the degree plans offered by the Department. The application process (including sending for transcripts) can take 8 or more weeks.

If applying for the Online Master's in Family Studies, write "DE" or "Distance Education" in the space where the form asks you to name a campus (TWU has several). This does not limit you to online courses. It does alert us and the Graduate School to your needs as a distance student.
