Programs of Study
| Degree programs offered in departments and schools of the College of Arts and Sciences lead to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of General Studies, Bachelor of Business Administration, Master of Arts, Master of Science, Master of Business Administration, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. This broad range of academic programs is offered through the following departments and schools: |

| • School of the Arts, directed by Dr. Penny Hanstein, offers degree programs in dance, drama, music, and art. (See individual listings.) Faculty and students share in creating and presenting musicals, dance and music concerts, and theatrical productions. Special facilities include the 1,150-seat Margo Jones Performance Hall, named for the award-winning TWU alumnus; two concert recital halls; performance studios in dance; and two galleries that complement the east and west wings of the Fine Arts Building. |

| • The Biology department, chaired by Dr. Sarah McIntire, offers degree programs that prepare students for graduate studies, admission to medical technology, medical, dental or professional schools, for teaching careers and for careers as biologists. The doctoral program in Molecular Biology prepares graduates for careers as research scientists and as academic professionals. |

| • The Chemistry and Physics department, chaired by Dr. Richard Sheary, offers degree programs to help students acquire an understanding of the behavior of material substances and of the energy changes involved. Studies prepare students for graduate work in chemistry, admission to medical, dental or pharmacy school, and careers as professional chemists or teachers. |

| • The Criminal Justice program, directed by Dr. Jim Williams, acquaints students with legal aspects, procedures and functions of the various agencies of the criminal justice system and prepares students to work within the system. |

| • The Dance department , chaired by Dr. Penelope Hanstein, emphasizes performance, choreography, and dance studies merging theory and practice in such contexts as artistic process, dance in diverse cultures, history, movement analysis, pedagogy and the scholarship of teaching. |

| • The Drama program, directed by Professor Sharon Benge, enables students to gain practical as well as academic training in preparation for careers in professional and educational theater. Majors may emphasize acting and directing and/or design and production, or prepare for secondary teacher certification. |

| • The English, Speech, and Foreign Languages department, chaired by Dr. Bruce Krajewski, offers a series of courses in writing, literature, and foreign languages (Spanish and French), as well as English language courses for international students. The department offers several programs of study, including minors in English and Spanish, teacher certification, Bachelor's and Master's degrees in English, and a Ph.D. in Rhetoric. |

| • The Fashion and Textiles program, directed by Dr. Deborah Young, offers one of the leading fashion design and merchandising degree programs in the Southwest. TWU's location near the Dallas fashion industry provides students with access to one of the nation's largest market and production centers. Majors and minors are available in fashion design and fashion merchandising. |

| • The Bachelor of General Studies degree, directed by Dr. Don E. Edwards, offered through the College of Arts and Sciences, is an interdisciplinary program that provides versatility for adult learners and part-time students who need a flexible curriculum designed to balance work and life responsibilities with educational goals. Concentration areas may be selected from the following disciplines: Business, Computer Science, English, Government, History, Mathematics, Sociology, Dance Studies, Art, and Kinesiology. |

| • The Health Systems Management program (in Dallas), coordinated by Dr. Rob Maurer, offers a Master of Health Care Administration degree for individuals pursuing management careers in the Health Care industry. The Dallas Program also participates in a joint M.B.A./M.H.A. offering with the TWU School of Management. |

| • The History and Government department, (Dr. Barbara Presnall is serving as interim-chair), offers majors and minors in history, government, criminal justice and in programs leading to teacher certification. Special studies are offered in legal assistant/paralegal programs; pre-law advising also is available. Courses in women's history are offered regularly. |

| • The School of Management, directed by Dr. Ann Hughes, offers undergraduate B.B.A. degrees in accounting, business administration, finance, human resources management, management, and marketing; a B.S. degree is offered for those interested in a teaching career. Global initiatives, developing ethical leaders, and encouraging innovations are key aspects of the undergraduate and graduate programs. The Executive M.B.A. program is an accelerated program offering professionals an applied M.B.A. degree in a high tech/high touch format |

| • The Mathematics and Computer Science department, chaired by Dr. Don E. Edwards, offers courses to prepare students for graduate studies, for teaching in elementary and secondary schools, and for careers in mathematics, computer science and related fields in business, industry or government. A major and minor are offered in mathematics and in computer science. |

| • The Music department, chaired by Dr. James Chenevert, offers studies in music therapy, performance (voice, piano, organ, flute, clarinet), teacher education, music-liberal arts, and pedagogy (the latter at the graduate level only.) Ensemble opportunities are offered in choir, wind ensemble, jazz, and both vocal and instrumental chamber ensembles. TWU was the first college or university in Texas to offer a degree in music. |

| • The Psychology and Philosophy department, chaired by Dr. Daniel C. Miller, provides a strong foundation in psychology including undergraduate programs in psychology as well as specialist and doctoral level school psychology programs and masters and doctoral level Counseling Psychology programs.. At the undergraduate level, the program prepares students to enter the job market in the helping professions or for advanced study. The department also offers a minor in philosophy. |

| • The Social Work program includes theoretical concepts, values, and skills taught through participation in classroom, laboratory, and field settings. The Bachelor of Social Work degree prepares majors for the beginning level of professional social work practice, with career choices in health settings, children’s and family services, youth work, community mental health, public welfare and services for the elderly. |

| • The Sociology and Social Work department, chaired by Dr. Jim Williams, provides a systematic study of human society and the application of sociological theories, methods and techniques of research. Also prepares students for beginning social work practice. Offers majors and minors in sociology, social work or criminal justice. |

| • The Visual Arts department, chaired by Professor John Weinkein, includes the fine and applied arts, with degree programs in Art Education, Art History, Graphic Design, Photography, with Business, Studio Concentrations in: Clay, Painting, Photography, and Sculpture. Offers a major and minor in art; also leads to teacher certification in Art Education. |

| • The Women's Studies program, directed by Dr. Claire L. Sahlin, is the only M.A. program in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. The program also offers a wide range of courses for the undergraduate core curriculum, an undergraduate minor, and a graduate certificate. This unique program fosters insight and understanding of gender as a pervasive social construction through the study of multicultural women's lives within global, historical, political, cultural and intellectual contexts. |

| In addition, the College of Arts and Sciences offers several new certificate programs. For undergraduates, a Digital Media Minor through the Departments of Visual Arts, English, and Mathematics and Computer Science.
