Texas Women's Hall Of Fame Finds Home at Texas Woman's University

DENTON — Women's History Month may be coming to a close, but it's the opening of a new chapter for the Texas Women's Hall of Fame. On March 27, Texas First Lady Anita Perry will dedicate the Hall of Fame's first exhibit, located at Texas Woman's University.

Established in 1984, the Hall of Fame had been without exhibit space until Texas Woman's University volunteered space.

"After 19 years, the Texas Women's Hall of Fame has finally found a home," said Keely Appleton, commissioner, Governor's Commission for Women. "Now, future generations can learn about the accomplishments of these notable Texas women. We are grateful to TWU and the sponsors who have made this exhibit become a reality."

Mrs. Perry will dedicate the Texas Women's Hall of Fame exhibit on Thursday, March 27 during a ceremony with several of the Hall's honorees in attendance. The Hall of Fame opens to the general public Friday, March 28.

The Texas Women's Hall of Fame exhibit is housed in Hubbard Hall, located on TWU's Denton campus. Admission is free. The Hall of Fame is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., except during university holidays. Special arrangements for groups wishing to visit the exhibit on other days and times can be made through TWU's Office of Conference Services at (940) 898-3644.

"I am thrilled that the Texas Women's Hall of Fame exhibit will be housed on the campus of Texas Woman's University. What an honor! One of the highlights of my career was being inducted into the Hall of Fame," said Ann Williams, a member of the TWU Board of Regents who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2002.

Other inductees include women such as astronaut Sally Ride, Dallas real estate broker Ebby Halliday and former White House insiders Liz Carpenter and Karen Hughes.

TWU was selected for the Texas Women's Hall of Fame exhibit because it was a "natural fit," according to officials with the Governor's Commission for Women. TWU has archived commission records for years, and the two entities have had a long-standing relationship.

The Texas Women's Hall of Fame was created to honor the state's most outstanding women, including former first ladies, teachers, athletes and astronauts. Texas residents submit nominations and an independent panel of judges selects award recipients. Currently, 114 women have been inducted into the Hall of Fame.
