receives $416,000 estate gift — 11/18/08
DENTON — The Texas Woman’s University Foundation has received a $416,000 gift from the estate of longtime Denton resident Celia Jamison Sankey.
The unrestricted gift from the TWU alumna will be used by the foundation in its mission to support the university.
Mrs. Sankey, who passed away Feb. 8, 2008, received her bachelor’s degree in art from the Texas State College for Women (now TWU) in 1941. She taught art at the university for several years until her retirement.

DENTON — Texas Woman’s University will host artist Nate Larson’s “Burden of Proof” and highlight the work of TWU graduate students in graphic design during two shows running concurrently in the university’s galleries.
The exhibits run Monday, Nov. 17 through Friday, Nov. 21, with an opening reception scheduled from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18. DENTON —Jose Zamora, a master of fine arts student in dance at Texas Woman’s University, has been awarded a 2008-09 Jacob K. Javits Fellowship. chosen for new national American Democracy Project initiative — 9/09/08

— The American Association of State Colleges and Universities
(AASCU) has selected Texas Woman’s University to participate
in the American Democracy Project Civic Agency Initiative,
a new national program focused on encouraging students to

Board awards TWU largest work-study mentorship grant in the

— The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB)
has awarded Texas Woman’s University a $175,000 grant
for its G-Force student-mentorship program, which is designed
to increase enrollment among first-generation college students
in Texas. This is the second consecutive year that TWU’s
G-Force program has received the most funding of any university
in the state.
These grant funds
will go directly to TWU students in the form of wages earned
for working in the TWU Go Centers.

of the Texas Woman’s University chemistry and physics
department, has been elected a 2008-2009 SENCER (Science Education
for New Civic Engagements and Responsibilities) Leadership
Fellow by the National Fellowship Board of the National Center
for Science and Civic Engagement.
Dr. Sheardy is
one of 76 educators elected to the inaugural class of fellows
from the more than 1,300 faculty members and academic leaders
who are part of the SENCER community. SENCER is a national
initiative that engages students in science and math by focusing
coursework on real world problems.

Nursing has been awarded a $614,959 federal grant for its
doctor of nurse practitioner (DNP) degree program.
The funds, to be
awarded over a three-year period by the U.S. Department of
Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration’s
(HRSA) Advanced Education Nursing Program, will be used to
improve access to TWU’s DNP for nurses serving rural
and underserved populations.

Board awards TWU nearly $250,000 to address nursing shortage

— Texas Woman’s University — already the
largest educator of new nurses in Texas — will offer
a weekend nursing program to help alleviate the nursing shortage,
thanks to a grant from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating
Board (THECB.)
TWU will use the
$249,777 grant from the THECB to partner with the Baylor University
Medical Center at Dallas to create the “Reinventing
Nursing Education: An Education and Practice Partnership.”

Drama presents ‘Proof’ — 2/6/08
DENTON — The Texas Woman’s University Drama Program brings David Auburn’s award-winning drama “Proof” to the stage of the Redbud Theater Complex Feb. 28 through March 2.
Performances will be at 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28; 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Feb. 29 and March 1; and 2 p.m. Sunday, March 2. The Redbud Theater Complex is located on the northwest side of historic Hubbard Hall on TWU’s Denton campus. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. receives $2.2 million from Deiker estate for student scholarships

DENTON –
More Texas Woman’s University students will receive
scholarships to help meet their educational goals thanks to
a $2.2 million gift from the estate of Helen Haddix Deiker
of Fort Worth, a past president of the TWU Former Students
Association. The gift to the TWU Foundation will be used to
establish the Helen Haddix Deiker and Robert W. Deiker Endowment
Fund.
