TWU Hosts Choice College for Dallas ISD High School Seniors

DENTON — Forty Dallas Independent School District high school seniors will learn that college is an option for them when they spend four days at Texas Woman’s University this summer as part of the Choice College program.

The academically mid-tier and economically challenged students, from North Dallas, Adamson, Madison, Pinkston and Lincoln high schools, will take part of the residential camp July 31-Aug. 3. “Choice College is designed to encourage and empower all students to make a choice to pursue higher education opportunities and secure a better future,” said Cynthia A. González, founder of Garland-based Choice College Inc.

During their stay at TWU, the seniors will receive first-hand exposure to the college experience, complete the Texas common college application, learn about financial aid and scholarship resources available, meet with counselors, receive leadership training and, under the guidance of writing coaches, hone their writing skills by telling their personal stories.

Also by the end of the camp, each senior will have applied for a minimum of five scholarships.

Two teachers from each of the participating high schools also will attend the program and receive training so they can continue to work with the seniors throughout the school year and encourage other students to choose college.

The program also gets the students’ parents involved in their higher education pursuits. “The parental component trains and equips parents with the tools for the journey to college with their children,” Ms. González added.

Before founding Choice College, Ms. González, a retired executive from AT&T, served as executive director of College Summit, a similar program.
