TWU Music Students To Perform Opera, Chamber Music on April

DENTON Selections from Mozart's The Magic Flute,
Verdi's Il Trovatore and Bellini's Norma will be
among those performed by Texas Woman's University music students
April 27 during a concert titled TWU Voices with
Orchestra. The concert begins at 8 p.m. in the Margo Jones
Performance Hall. Admission is free.
In addition to the operatic selections, the 40-voice TWU
concert choir will perform Salut Printemps by Claude
Debussy and portions of the cantata Folk Songs for Women's
Voices by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Both chamber works were
composed specifically for women's voices. The TWU Mixed Chamber
Vocal Ensemble also will perform Gabriel Faurte's Pavanne.
The concert will feature two conductors, Susan Davenport
Stewart, TWU's assistant professor of choral activities, and
guest conductor Bliss Johnston Virago of Treviso, Italy. Ms.
Johnston Virago has conducted and coached opera at Vancouver
Opera; Australian Opera; Sao Paolo, Brazil; Decca Records,
London; Casals Festival Orch, Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C.
She has coached performances with such singers as Joan
Sutherland, Luciano Pavorotti and Marilyn Horne.
The concert's singers will be accompanied by a chamber
orchestra composed of professional musicians from the area.
