Burns To Lecture About Fulbright/Saudi Program
10/15/02
DENTON Dr. Hugh Burns, chair of the Department of
English, Speech and Foreign Languages at Texas Woman's
University, will give a lecture titled "Forty-two Fulbright
Days in Saudi Arabia" on Nov. 7 from noon to 12:50 p.m. in
room 101 of the Blagg-Huey Library, located near the northwest
corner of Administration Drive and Bell Avenue. Admission is
free.
Burns served this summer as a Fulbright Senior Specialist at
the King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for the Gifted
in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. His duties included helping
lead seminars and workshops; conducting needs assessments,
surveys and programmatic research; and helping develop academic
curricula and educational materials.
"Saudi Arabia and the United States are interdependent
nations," Burns said. "It's not just about oil. There
is a common intellectual capital. Thousands upon thousands of
Saudi Arabians have studied in the colleges and universities of
the United States. Thousands upon thousands of American citizens
have worked and lived in the Kingdom for the past half century.
"There are differences, of course, in every dimension
historical, cultural, political and economic. Some
differences are real, but some differences are only perceived or
manufactured."
