9/17/04
DENTON — A
Texas Woman’s University project aimed at alleviating the
state’s critical teacher shortage has been awarded $1.1 million
from the U.S. Department of Education.
Project Gateway is a
five-year project to focus on training, placing and mentoring math,
English as a Second Language and general classroom teachers with
the Dallas Independent School District. The grant will provide scholarships
to mid-career professionals who are seeking to enter the teaching
field.
“Our goal is to
certify 140 teachers through TWU’s Master of Arts in Teaching
(MAT) program,” said Dr. Claudia Sanchez, TWU assistant professor
of teacher education and director of the project. “This grant
will help support Dallas ISD, the second largest school district
in the state. We are extremely excited about Project Gateway and
are proud to have received this award.”
The U.S. Department of
Education awarded a total of 32 grants worth $18.3 million as part
of the No Child Left Behind Act, an education reform law designed
to change the culture of America’s schools by closing the
achievement gap among groups of students.

Gateway, contact Dr. Sanchez at (940) 898-2009.
