DENTON –
Continuing its support of faculty research, Texas Woman’s
University has announced 10 Chancellor’s Research Fellows
for 2008-2009.
“The program
pairs less-experienced faculty protégés who
have strong potential for gaining external research funding
with senior faculty mentors who have been successful at obtaining
funds from federal agencies or other sources and have published
their research,” said Dr. Jo Ann Engelbrecht, director
of research and sponsored programs at TWU.
This year’s
protégés and mentors are: Dr. Patricia Casey,
teacher education, who will be mentored by Dr. Charlotte (Barney)
Sanborn, kinesiology; Dr. Kimberly Booker, psychology and
philosophy, who will be mentored by Dr. Lynda Uphouse, biology.
Dr. Noralyn Pickens, occupational therapy – Dallas,
who will be mentored by Dr. Susan Sheriff, nursing –
Dallas; Dr. Pushkala Raman, School of Management, who will
be mentored by Dr. Nancy DiMarco, Institute for Women's Health
and nutrition and food sciences; and Dr. Jian Zhang, mathematics
and computer science, who will be mentored by Dr. Richard
Sheardy, chemistry and physics.
Protégés
and mentors receive monetary awards to use for their individual
research needs. The program is now in its eighth year and
funding is provided by the TWU Chancellor’s Circle and
the TWU Foundation.
Mentors assist
their protégés in developing their research
agendas and proposals. Protégés are responsible
for preparing at least one grant application for external
funding during the fellowship year or the following academic
year. Both mentors and protégés participate
in research roundtables where topics such as locating funding
opportunities and proposal review and critique are discussed.
