Lauren Greenfield,
photographer and author of ‘THIN,’ to lecture
at TWU

DENTON —
Noted photographer Lauren Greenfield will lecture on her work
documenting youth culture and the issues of self and body
image among young women during “An Evening With Lauren
Greenfield,” scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, April 5,
in the Multipurpose Classroom and Laboratory (MCL) Auditorium
on Bell Avenue on TWU’s Denton campus. The event includes
a panel discussion on “Body Image, Identity, and Our
Culture’s Conflicting Messages.” The event is
free and open to the public.
Ms. Greenfield’s
latest work, an award-winning HBO documentary titled, “THIN,”
will have three screenings on TWU’s Denton campus: at
7 p.m. Tuesday, April 3 in the Classroom Faculty Office (CFO)
Building, room 103; and at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, and
Thursday, April 5, in the MCL Auditorium. All screenings are

In “THIN,”
her first feature-length documentary film, along with a companion
photography book, Ms. Greenfield embarked on an emotional
journey through the Renfrew Center in Coconut Creek, Fla.,
a residential facility dedicated to the treatment of eating
disorders. The documentary premiered at the Sundance Film
Festival in 2006. It won the Grierson Award for best documentary
at the London Film Festival, and Grand Jury Prizes at the
Independent Film Festival of Boston, the Newport International
Film Festival and the Jackson Hole Film Festival. “THIN”
was honored in the 2007 Photo District News Annual book and
photojournalism categories. It also is a traveling museum
exhibition curated by Trudy Wilner Stack that debuted at The
Women’s Museum in Dallas in February and will travel
through 2010.
Panelists for “Body
Image, Identity, and Our Culture’s Conflicting Messages”
are Dr. Jillian M. Duquaine-Watson, TWU assistant professor
of women’s studies; Dr. Linda Marshall, TWU associate
professor of social work; Dr. Shannon Rich, TWU assistant
professor of psychology; and Dr. Kelly Simonson, a licensed
psychologist with the TWU Counseling Center.
