Drama presents works by Edward Albee — 11/20/07
DENTON — The Texas Woman’s University drama program joins the national celebration of playwright Edward Albee’s 80th birthday by presenting two of his best works, “The American Dream” and “The Sandbox.”

DENTON — Beverly Hoch, an adjunct assistant professor of music in Texas Woman’s University’s School of the Arts, will hold her third annual Concert for the Cure at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16. TWU kicks off State Employee Charitable Campaign — 10/9/07
DENTON — Texas Woman’s University has kicked off its annual State Employee Charitable Campaign (SECC) with a goal of raising $60,000 and having 85 percent faculty and staff participation from its Denton, Dallas and Houston campuses.
In 2006, TWU was recognized by the state for having the highest participation rate — 86 percent — for colleges and university with 751 to 2,000 employees. Through the generosity of the university’s faculty and staff, TWU raised $75,489 in 2006, which surpassed the prior year’s total of $65,629.

TWU's sixth consecutive year of enrollment growth sees record 12,000 students — 9/13/07
DENTON — Enrollment at Texas Woman’s University has climbed above 12,000 for the first time in university history, with a record 12,183 students enrolled for fall 2007.
The previous enrollment record of 11,832 students was set in fall 2006. The 3 percent increase for fall 2007 continues six consecutive years of enrollment growth. Most importantly, TWU’s total semester credit hours grew 4.3 percent to 120,707 hours, up from 115,701 last fall — also a record. Student credit hours, not headcount, determine the university’s state total funding.

TWU's Spurlock appointed to State Advisory Board of Athletic Trainers — 9/11/07
DENTON — Becky Spurlock, a master’s student in kinesiology at Texas Woman’s University, recently was appointed by Gov. Rick Perry to the State Advisory Board of Athletic Trainers.
Ms. Spurlock, who is the assistant athletic director of the Keller Independent School District, is one of five members appointed to the board, which is the licensing and regulatory authority of athletic trainers in Texas. She is eligible for re-appointment at the end of each two-year term.

TWU graduate named National Library of Medicine Associate Fellow — 9/4/07
HOUSTON — Emily Vardell, an August 2007 Texas Woman’s University graduate, has been appointed a National Library of Medicine Associate Fellow for 2007-08.
Ms. Vardell is the daughter of Dr. Sylvia Vardell, professor of library sciences on TWU’s Denton campus, and Dr. Russell Vardell of Grand Prairie. She graduated from South Grand Prairie High School in 2001 and from Wellesley College in 2005. She earned her master of library science degree in August from the TWU Institute of Health Sciences-Houston Center.
The NLM Associate Fellowship Program is a one-year postgraduate training fellowship at the National Library of Medicine in Bethesda, MD. The program, which includes a $46,041 stipend, is designed to prepare librarians for future leadership roles in health sciences libraries and in health services research. NLM Associate Fellows are selected from a nationwide pool of applicants. Approximately seven associate fellows are appointed each year.

Board awards TWU largest work-study mentorship grant in state

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) has
awarded Texas Woman’s University a $214,500 grant for
the university’s student-mentorship program, which is
designed to increase college enrollment among first-generation
college students in Texas. TWU’s G-Force program received
the most funding of any university in the state. G-Force members
mentor high school students, participate in college enrollment
workshops and help to staff TWU-sponsored Go Centers in area
high schools. A Go Center is a physical space in a high school
that offers students admission and financial aid application
assistance and other information to encourage greater participation
in higher education by potential first generation college
students.

student receives national nursing faculty fellowship —

Jose Alejandro, a doctoral student in nursing at Texas Woman’s
University, recently was awarded a Promise of Nursing for
Dallas/Fort Worth Regional Faculty Fellowship from the Foundation
of the National Student Nurses’ Association (FNSNA).
Mr. Alejandro is
one of 67 students in the nation and 10 in the state awarded
a faculty fellowship from the FNSNA. The foundation awarded
fellowships to graduate students in California, Georgia, Massachusetts,
Michigan, Mississippi, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Tennessee,
Texas and Washington.

College of Nursing now offering online master’s in nursing

— Texas Woman’s University’s College of
Nursing is offering a new online master of science in nursing
education degree for nurses who wish to become nurse educators.
The university is accepting students for the new 100 percent
online degree program for fall 2007 and spring 2008 enrollment.

MS in nursing education program puts TWU in a very competitive
position to recruit outstanding nurses who want to become
educators,” said Dr. Pat Holden-Huchton, associate dean
of the TWU College of Nursing in Denton. “TWU will also
benefit by providing a very real solution to both the nursing

DENTON — Classes at the Texas Woman’s University Community Dance Center return this fall with the opportunity for children, teens and adults to learn some new moves.Registration ends Friday, Aug. 24, with classes beginning Tuesday, Sept. 4. Regular classes range from six to 10 weeks in length, with prices ranging from $50 to $70. A $5 fee will be added for registration after Aug. 24.

TWU, Fort Worth ISD receive $1.3 million to improve English language literacy — 8/9/07
DENTON — Texas Woman’s University and the Fort Worth Independent School District have been awarded a $1.3 million federal grant to improve English language literacy and the academic achievement of English language learners in the Fort Worth ISD.
The U.S. Department of Education’s National Professional Development Program in the Office of English Language Acquisition recently awarded grants for projects designed to increase the pool of highly qualified teachers prepared to serve students with limited English proficiency and increase the skills of teachers already serving them. Project ACCELERATE, a collaborative effort of TWU and the Fort Worth ISD, received $1,306,911.

— The Texas Woman’s University golf course has
hired Thomas Roese of Arlington as the new supervisor of golf
course marketing and operations and Julie Halliburton of Cushing
as the new coordinator of golf course services.
“Tom is a certified golf course superintendent and has
more than 20 years of professional golf course experience.
Julie practically grew up on a golf course and has an extensive
university customer service background,” John Cissik,
director of TWU Fitness and Recreation, said. “Both
have outstanding qualifications and will be instrumental as
we continue in our two-year golf course revitalization plan.”

College of Nursing approved to offer new doctoral program

DALLAS/DENTON — Texas Woman’s University’s College of Nursing recently received approval from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) to offer a new doctoral degree program, the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP). “The DNP is designed to address the need for more highly educated nurses in the country’s increasingly technological-based healthcare system,” Dr. Marcia Hern, dean of the TWU College of Nursing, said. “Nurses who want to pursue doctoral education will be able to choose between a Ph.D., which is research focused, and a DNP, which is the highest level of specialty clinical practice. Both degrees will prepare nurses for positions as nursing faculty.”

Dr. Nan Restine has been named dean of the College of Professional
Education (COPE) at Texas Woman’s University. Dr. Restine

Dr. Charlotte (Barney) Sanborn, professor of kinesiology at
Texas Woman’s University, recently received the 2007
Honor Award from the Texas Chapter of the American College
of Sports Medicine (TACSM). Since 1992, the
TACSM has given the Honor Award to recognize an individual
who has made outstanding contributions to exercise science
and sports medicine while working in the state of Texas.

students travel to Vietnam to teach and practice physical

– Texas Woman’s University physical therapy graduate
students Sara Khanzadeh, Harmony Choi, Samantha Lehecka and
Alison Gallup recently traveled to Da Nang, Vietnam to teach
and provide physical therapy services to the community.“We spent
our time providing physical therapy services at a clinic in
Da Nang. We also presented a one-day shoulder rehabilitation
conference to area healthcare providers,” said Dr. Toni
Roddey, associate professor of physical therapy at the TWU
Institute of Health Sciences-Houston Center, who led the students
on the trip in May. TWU alumn Sandy Do also went on the trip.

School of Library and Information Studies receives nearly
$730,000 for
Professional Education for Librarians in Small Communities
(PELSC) project — 6/21/07
DENTON —
The Texas Woman’s University School of Library and Information
Studies has received a grant of $691,323 from the Institute
of Museum and Library Services and a second grant of $38,400
from Tocker Foundation to implement its Professional Education
for Librarians in Small Communities (PELSC) project. TWU,
the Texas Library Association and the Texas State Library
and Archives Commission will provide a matching amount of
$442,074 in both cash and in-kind services for the project.

TWU fitness and recreation fee approved by Gov. Perry
— 6/20/07

— A bill enabling Texas Woman’s University to
charge students a new fitness and recreation fee has been
signed by Gov. Rick Perry. HB 902, filed by
Rep. Myra Crownover (R-Denton), gives TWU the authorization
to charge the new fee — approved by a TWU student referendum
in spring 2006 — starting with the spring 2008 semester.

Dr. Nancy DiMarco, professor of nutrition and food sciences
at Texas Woman’s University, recently was named the
2007 Distinguished Scientist by the Texas Dietetic Association
(TDA). According to the
TDA, the award is given to a TDA member who has made outstanding
and significant contributions to research in the field of
dietetics, nutrition, food science or related sciences.

The Texas Woman’s University outdoor swimming pool is
now open to the public.
The pool is open
Monday through Saturday from noon to 6 p.m. and Sunday from
2 p.m. to 6 p.m. The pool is located near the northeast corner
of Bell Avenue and Administration Drive on the TWU Denton
campus. Admission is $2 for the public and free for TWU students
and TWU fitness and recreation center members.

according to preliminary 12th class day data released today.
Enrollment for

Drama to take part in national playwriting festival

While sitting down with her morning cup of coffee and the
“New York Times” one day last summer, Sharon Benge,
director of the drama program at Texas Woman’s University,
read an article that piqued her interest.The article stated
that Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks and
co-producer Bonnie Metzgar were planning a world premiere
of “365 Days/365 Plays,” Ms. Parks’ initiative
to write one play per day for a full year. The event would
include professional and university theaters throughout the
United States performing one week’s worth of plays,
creating the 365 National Festival — the largest theater
collaboration in the history of American theater.Ms. Benge was intrigued
with the idea and went to work. TWU’s application was
accepted by the Yale Playwriting Program, which is managing
university participation in the festival. TWU joins more than
600 theaters nationwide in the play cycle, which began Nov.
13, 2006, and ends Nov. 12, 2007.

settings,” was published in the December 2006 issue
of Research in Nursing & Health journal. The article reported
on research on bone health intervention aimed at assisting
older adults living independently in residential settings
to maintain healthy bones.

Community Dance Center offers new classes — 1/02/07

Classes at the Texas Woman’s University Community Dance
Center return this spring with the opportunity for children,
teens and adults to learn some new moves.Registration ends
Tuesday, Jan. 16, with classes beginning Monday, Jan. 22.
Regular classes range from six to 10 weeks in length, with
prices ranging from $50 to $60. A $5 fee will be added for
