Texas Senate
confirms Cecilia May Moreno as new TWU Regent
5/25/07

AUSTIN —
The Texas State Senate confirmed the appointment of Cecilia
May Moreno, Ed.D., to the Texas Woman’s University Board
of Regents earlier this week. Dr. Moreno, a TWU distinguished
alumna, will serve on the TWU governing board until Feb. 1,
2013.
“Dr. Moreno’s
long-standing ties with TWU and the Texas secondary education
community will be a tremendous asset in ensuring that TWU
continues to meet the critical needs of the state by educating
teachers and contributing to TWU’s involvement in the
challenges of college readiness, access and participation,"
TWU Chancellor
and President Dr. Ann Stuart said.
Harry L. Crumpacker
II, chair and presiding officer of the TWU Board of Regents,
said, “I join my fellow regents in welcoming Dr. Moreno
to the board and I look forward to working with her as TWU
continues to grow and thrive as an education leader in Texas.”
Dr. Moreno is the
superintendent of schools for Carrizo Springs Consolidated
Independent School District. Prior to her service at CSCISD,
she worked for the Laredo Independent School District for
39 years, was a Laredo City Councilmember for 10 years and
served as the mayor pro-tem for the city.
She was named a
TWU Distinguished Alumna in 2003 and has been inducted into
the Laredo Commission for Women’s Hall of Fame and the
LULAC Hispanic Heritage Hall of Fame. She is a member of the
Texas Association of School Administrators, LULAC Council
No. 12, Webb County Heritage Foundation and Laredo Center
for the Arts.
Dr. Moreno earned
a bachelor’s and master’s degree from TWU, an
MBA from Laredo State University and her doctorate of education
from Texas A&M University at Kingsville.
“It is exciting
for me to return to the same university that I attended as
a 16-year-old college freshman and serve on their Board of
Regents,” Dr. Moreno said. “As the state works
to create P-16 Councils that address the education continuum
of pre-kindergarten to college, I see an excellent opportunity
to enhance this concept by bringing my many years of public
school experience to the board.”
Dr. Moreno was
appointed to fill the expired term of Dr. Therese Bartholomew
Bevers of Houston. Earlier this month the Texas Senate confirmed
P. Mike McCullough and George R. Schrader of Dallas to fill
the expired terms of Mr. Kenneth Ingram of Denton and Ms.
Ann Williams of Dallas, respectively.
The next meeting
of the TWU Board of Regents will be held June 8 at the TWU
Institute of Health Sciences-Presbyterian Center in Dallas.
